Detroit Safety & Crime Survey
(DeSCS)

Survey questions focus on how you feel about the community safety in your neighborhood and police. Some questions ask about crimes around you. We also ask you about your social networks, for example, people who you feel close to.

Some of these questions may make you feel uncomfortable. Of course, you are free to skip the questions you don’t want to answer 

Anyone ages 18 or older living in Detroit are eligible to participate.

You need to be invited to the Detroit Safety & Crime Survey by someone you know or by our study team.

As a token of appreciation, we provide $25 Incentives for completing the survey. There may be additional incentives depending on your participation in recruiting other participants. 

The incentive payment is processed through Chase Bank either as a direct deposit or a check. You don’t need a Chase account to receive the payment.

The survey is designed to last 20-30 minutes.

Each invitation from the Detroit Safety & Crime Survey includes a unique code. You need to enter this on our website to participate in our survey. Each unique code can be used only once.

Without a unique number, we are not able to verify your eligibility and to assist you when you experience issues with accessing the survey or with rewards

Your inviting others is critical for the success of the Detroit Safety & Crime Survey.

You may wonder why we ask you to recruit other people instead of just recruiting  anyone who is willing to participate. The reason is that we are interested in examining whether social networks help more effective recruitment, generating more representative data.

We ask your name, mailing address and contact information (email address and phone number) to process the incentive payment and to send you invitations to recruit other people.

Please note that protecting your privacy is our priority. Your personal information will be kept following strict practices set by the University of Michigan separate from the survey responses and accessed only by the authorized research team members.

Your answers to survey questions will be prepared as a research data set and analyzed to generate aggregate statistics. They will be shared with other researchers through a data repository at the University of Michigan as we have done with our previous studies (e.g., Project Positive Attitudes Towards Health).

Note that your personal information will be stored separately from the research data and will not be shared with anyone.
